![]() The D800 rounds out the Latitude line with a wide-screen offering, something most other corporate lineups don't include. The 802.11g wireless adapter performed well, achieving rates of 19.8Mbps at 1 foot and 2.4Mbps at 160 feet. And battery life (3:15) took a hit because of that big screen. Performance was fine for business applications, if a bit shy of the other Pentium M 745 (1.8 GHz) equipped boxes here (and even some 735-equipped machines). But corporate buyers will be pleased to know that Dell has committed to keeping those items unchanged for at least five years (for point of reference: the previous C-series accessories worked with newly introduced models over a seven-year span). With the D-series, Dell introduced new docking stations and accessories not compatible with older Latitudes. That's not the right choice for 3D games, but the 128MB of video RAM means the D800 can handle even graphics-intensive 2D apps with aplomb. Video is driven by the nVidia GeForce FX Go 5650. And when using the pointing stick, the area below the Spacebar isn't recessed enough we found our thumb constantly hitting against it. But the touchpad's mouse buttons are noisy. The keyboard is comfortable, and we like that the D800 has both a touchpad and pointing stick. And Dell has included a Smart Card slot below the PC Card slot, for companies that are going that route for security. Network connectivity is via 100MB Ethernet or the Dell TrueMobile 802.11 b/g wireless solution. We are happy to see a generous four USB 2.0 ports (distributed on both the back and the side of the system), not to mention a FireWire port, an S-Video port, and a VGA port. Also, the screen's maximum resolution of 1,680-by-1,050 is lower than other panels of this size that we've seen, which mitigates somewhat the benefits of the larger screen. The large screen brings system weight to 7.2 pounds, though, making this a better choice for your desk-bound employees, not road warriors. The highlight of the D800 is its 15.4-inch wide-screen LCD-a feature not typically found on a business notebook. It has an extensive feature set, but middle-of-the-road performance and some design choices hold it back. The Dell Latitude D800 is an okay machine in a crop of better-than-average entries.
